In our ongoing Real Talk Series, I had an insightful conversation with my parents, Ben and Tamie about their journey raising three sons who were born blind, and me, the sighted daughter. While my parents have often kept their thoughts about our family dynamic private, they opened up about their personal experiences and challenges.

As first time and young parents in the 1970s, they had to navigate a healthcare system that had limited experience with Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis, quickly understand a diagnosis of a rare disorder, navigate through each stage of childhood, and advocate for equal resources and support. Through our conversation, I realized how this experience deepened their partnership and mutual respect, and how it shaped them into who they are today. It was truly enlightening, and I’m incredibly grateful to them for sharing their story
